Cold sores

Cold sores are small painful blisters that can appear around the mouth, face, or nose. Cold sores (or fever blisters) are very common. They usually go away on their own within 1 to 2 weeks.

No medicines can make the virus go away. However, if conditions allow, our pharmacists can prescribe or recommend some treatments that can help make cold sores less painful and not last as long.

Eligibility criteria and details

The pharmacist CAN prescribe a medication if:

  • The patient has already been diagnosed by a healthcare professional qualified to prescribe.
  • A prescription for the condition has already been written.

A pharmacist CANNOT prescribe a medication if:

  • More than 5 years have passed since the last prescribed treatment.

Unless there is clinical justification or a supply shortage, the pharmacist should normally re-prescribe the drug listed on the reference prescription. When prescribing a different drug, the pharmacist should ensure that the drug prescribed is in a class of drugs of equal or lesser potency than the one originally prescribed.

If more than 5 years have passed since the last prescribed treatment or if this condition has never been diagnosed, the pharmacist may still prescribe or recommend an over-the-counter medication if the patient's clinical situation or any other circumstance justifies it.
